Colour of Expansion Tank
Hi all! I would really like to know why some 75's have the black coloured header tank (expansion tank) and others have the yellow clear version.
Both mine are the black version which is a real pain as got to take off the cap to view water level. Just got my hands on a yellow clear one so if it keeps driving me mad checking with undoing the cap, I can just do a quick re-fit. But question is!!!!!! is there any difference with either tank (black or clear) I noticed the caps have a number at the bottom end of the cap, plus one cap is black on the clear tank and the other cap is grey on the black tank. Black tank (grey cap) number is: 100. Clear tank (black cap) number is: 140. Does any of this make any sense? |

I have never even seen a black header tank.
The best way to check your coolant level is on level ground with a cold engine preferably when its dark!!! Simply shine a powerfull torch down through the tank, holding the torch infront of the filler cap.. Gently rock the tank, you will see the red collant moving around in there, hopefully right on the MAX mark!!

Black tanks were fitted to earlier cars, later ones had yellow(ish), I think the idea was to aid checking the level.

Black tanks - Cowley built, Cream tanks - Longbridge built; with a very few exceptions that prove the rule

According to the EPC the black expansion tank part no: PCF101484 was used in cars up until VIN 158718 (model year 2000) when it was changed to the lighter colour one PCF101495.
Notice how the black one seems to have an overflow pipe, yet the later one doesn't |

Thanks Reebs
aaaarrrrh! you are a genius, the overflow pipe I have been looking at my black tank that's on the car and have been looking at my newly second hand cream tank. I have been thinking there is something different between them both and that's it, the overflow pipe. Why does one have one and the other don't? does anyone know..... |

on the right hand side of the tank on the so called clear variant, there is a min/max indicator, which is of no use unless you shine a torch on it in the dark
