Default Help! How do you refix teh chrome surround to the Rover V8 premium bumper?

As title, really.

My chrome trim has been loose ever since I bought the car, and I have had the bottom refixed with what looks like aruldite on a couple of occasions.

But now it has come loose at the top as well and so I have taken it off before it falls off.

Having read of the difficulties in sourcing replacements, I'm not keen to try to refit it till I know exactly what to do.

Looking at what I've taken off, and what's left, I think I may have a couple of nut/bolt fixings missing, but assume those are easy enough to obtain.

But the part itself looks as though it may have been originally fitted using some sort of glass or fibreglass melt fixing at some points? And it looks like these are what failed.

Has anyone got any exxperience of refitting these parts, or access to any technical details to say how they should be refitted?

I completely removed all the old fixing material from both the metal mount and the plastic surround and then refixed each metal mount using a hot plastic glue gun. They all need doing, inc. those that are still fixed as they will come away..

Thanks!

That sounds like the solution I've been looking for.

Thanks! That's a great idea. I have the top corner coming loose and getting behind it appears to be a massive job! I'll dig my wife's glue gun out!

Cheers.

Ah, and now I realize that I need about 5 of the actual fixings.

Does anyone know where I can get them, or even what the part no is? Would the Audi grille be fixed the same way, by any chance?

Audi grilles are normally clipped in.

Q-Bond may be a better product to use for securing the fixings, it's as near as permanent!

Rimmers can't help withn the fixings.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Does anyone know of one being broken that may have some clips left?

Please don't use a glue gun! The problem with the original fixings was that epoxy adhesive was used, and over time this has gone brittle and parted from the metal shell. Hot glue will also harden, and eventually go the same way.

I have repaired 3 of these grilles now, all done with a flexible Dow Corning silicon adhesive. I have also had 200 sets of fasteners specially manufactured in 316 stainless so that the original mild steel ones (which corrode in-situ and then shear as you try to remove the nuts) can be thrown away .

I will post a how-to on here shortly.

Good one Jezzer! I'm glad I have been delayed and didn't get the glue gun out.
