Exhaust box outer delaminating slightly
Howdy to one and all.
Just been taking a peek under the new love of my life (that's the car not the wife...) and have noticed that the rear exhaust box outer skin is delaminating slightly (one place only), had a careful poke around and am fairly sure it's only the outer skin, so don't really want to think about replacing (can't afford it at the moment anyway!!), just wondering if it would be advisable / possible / worthwhile 'coating' the box (waxoyl) etc? All opinions and views gratefully received. Cheers, ceb |

I'd say just wire brush the rusty outer skin if you want to tidy it up. Certainly don't use anything that will burn off an extremely hot (flesh roasting) exhaust box.

my original back box has been 'delaminating' for 3 years now. Still works fine.

Mine (a '99) was already delaminating a bit when I got the car and I assume that is the original exhaust. It has developed a hole now and needs replacing but that took almost another three years.

I've had the same experience as Biggles. Delamination does not constitute an MOT failure. Sit tight until it starts blowing, only then buy a new silencer. Simon.

Managed 100,000 miles before the flexi before the CAT started to leak. Not
bad for an original system. Changed to a stainlees steel exhaust as it was cheaper than using original parts. |

Same story here. On mine, first reg 2000, the exhaust first got a mention as an advisory on the MOT in May 2006, still haven't replaced it yet.
