Default Question on new style for old style Front Bumper

Hi all,

I have been offered a new style front bumper, with the grill, two of the new style headlights and, fog lights and indicators for £120, i just need to get it resprayed

1st Question - Is this cheap?

2nd Question - Is it easy to swop everything over, ie is all the connectors the same for the headlights, indicators and fogs, and would i have to put the car on to a t4 if i changed it all over

Thanks

Andrew

Hi there.

It sounds relatively cheap for the bumper although I assume it is second hand?

You probably need to speak to member Stubie who has done that exact thing and fitted the facelift bumper to his Mk1. he will be able to tell you how difficult it was.

Only thing I would add is that it may look odd if you don't also change the rear bumper as the facelift nose and rear has no chrome trims. If you keep the Mk1 rear bumper you will still have a chrome trim round the sides and rear, it may look odd, although as I have never seen one like that I may be wrong. I think Stubie changed both bumpers.

It depends on why you want to change I suppose? Do you want to make the car look younger (if so do both bumpers) or is it that you prefer the look of the Mk2?

Thanks derek,

I had a contemporary se before my current car, and i loved the front end, so i thought as i could get the parts cheap, i would give it a go and see what it looks like. I would consider doing the rear bumper aswell, but i'd have to sort out the parking sesnsors and i did not want to mess with them.

If the front end has proved easier to other members then i might just give the back end a go.

Oh and yes it is from another car, its one that has had an engine fault so it has the rear bumper, i might see how much that would cost aswell.

just need to know how time consuming it would be.

Also would it be easy to get hold of Arden green paint or can it still be mxed

It's no problem what so ever. Same fixings for bumper and lights. Take 1-2 hours depending on how easy to undo the fixings (soem may have rusted in)

Thats a good price for bumper and lights. Bear in mind you cannot remove the grill as you can on a Mk1 model.

£120 is a good price with the grill and headlights. Even better if they are Xenons.

To give you an example Stocktake has just got me a replacement Mk1 with indicators and fogs for £50. It's even got the powerwash stuff on it. Sadly no grill but I've already got one.

You can take the car to most bodyshops for a bumper spray. The paint mix is in the public domain so they mix up what is required.

I believe the bonnet release mechanism is different on the Facelift bumper, that is, the release lever that comes through the grill on the Mk.1 is not used on the facelift.
A simple pushback lever is used on the facelift.

STUBIE.
This is a great way of making the car look younger. It's not my cup of tea as I prefer the look of the MK1.

Did this increase your insurance premiums at all?

After replacing the bumper you will have to tell your insurance company of the modification. It's probably worth checking with them first just in case they want to charge you much for it.

OEM parts so nothing changed.

My 53 plate was a 2004 reg so didn't make it any younger, but I prefer the facelift look.

Duotone's right on the bonnet release but my 53 plate already had the newer style release so depends on how old your Mk1 is

I'll have you know my post count has suffered tremendously recently with collecting parts for people and changing engines.

The bonnet open through the bumper switch was deleted in 2001 as part of Project Drive. few if any 51 reg cars onwards had the original fitted.
