This event, or something very similar was reported on the forum around that time. Thankfully 90% of 75/ZT spring fractures occur as the car is just starting off, often with the steering on the turn and in cold weather.
There are now literally dozens of threads describing members' experiences of spring fracture dating back well over a decade. Springs are most vulnerable during the winter months. Early reports from MGR indicated they were aware of the low temperature effect and actually advised service depots to avoid getting brake cleaning sprays (which are very volatile) onto the springs to avoid the chilling effect. Microscopic impurities/fissures on the metal surface, combined with road salt also exaccerbate the problem. Whether this is down to the 'cheap' imported steel used these days or that springs were rather heavier built in the good old days is a matter of conjecture. However, MGR's recall was definitely the result of a batch of sub-standard springs being fitted to a large number of vehicles. This is why the recall covered a specific VIN range. Be that as it may, all makes of car are subject to similar spring beakage rates, so fitting these tyre protection gizmos is a no-brainer really.

Worth remembering that strut top bearings can be a factor in your springs breaking.

Always worth changing them when fitting new springs.

Does anyone know the VIN ranges out of curiosity? The ZT was registered late 02 but was actually built in Feb, curious if it is a naughty one or not!

Question A little bump for an unanswered question...

"I've noticed that oddly the 2 protectors are exactly similar hence that weird vertical tongue with a hole - for a bolt? why? which? - below the large cup is either in the front or in the back once fitted on any of each sides.
And mind my sealed plastic bag was a genuine MG Rover, so likely no mistake, and they were both fitted without any concern."

I fitted them to my saloon not long after I got it and this morning have fitted protectors to the Tourer.
Don't fancy a spring going through the tyre .

Thanks for that link, Bob. Really useful.

It looks like my 75 is in the affected VIN range so, as I saw they are reduced to £15.00 a pair at the mo at Rimmers I thought "love a good offer, I'll get them".

I always fall for it ..... when it adds on the £8 postage and oh, don't forget the VAT, it suddenly becomes £27.54.

Yes, probably still worth it for the safety/insurance aspect on my "keeper", but did come away from the impulse buy with a sigh.....

Similar, but "up front", pricing on an the bay of fleas.

Not a pop at Rimmers per se, just a comment on my Retail Experience....

Happy Roving, all

John
