Brake Duty Solenoid 2/4

Being that I have my first ever auto box R40 I have been doing a little reading on Auto gear fluid change and what type to use, this I have now.

While reading I came across a few threads that talk about the brake duty solenoids ref mainly to the 2/4 JF506E as this seems to be the main trouble for jerky gear change.

Will the solenoid below in the link be ok for our cars, and are they worth purchasing to keep on the shelf just in case cheers Arctic.

Hi Steve,

Before you buy anything directly from the USA, have you talked to JP Automatic Transmissions south of Bristol?

You can also get them from Landrover Parts suppliers. Your local Landrover dealer can order them in for you.

First port of call for most auto box problems is to make sure the fluid is changed when it should be and the correct fluid is used and it is levelled properly.

Hi Simon.
Thank you for the link, I have not talked to anyone as of yet, I am just enquiring weather it would be wise to keep the 2/4 solenoid on the shelf as a ready to go spare, if and when it fails as I have read this is the most likely the part to go wrong.

Than k you for that information, at the moment fingers crossed the gearbox is working as it should, smooth gear change no jerking I have already sorted out the gearbox oil so I can change the oil, I am going to do this as I do not know the history of when or if it as ever been changed.

Through reading on how to do the oil change I came across a few threads on the 2/4 solenoid problem therefore I was in the mind of would it be worth purchasing the part ready to keep on the shelf if and when the gearbox was to play up ? cheers Arctic.

I bought one of these a month or so ago from the US, purely as a "just in case" purchase.

Quick delivery and (at the time) less than half the price than here .... although I think it might have been Mat that had an offer on these recently, someone did.

I also bought the cover gasket from JP Auto Transmission (see Simon's link) as they had them, rather than use liquid gasket method mentioned in a How To on here somewhere.

I think my car will have more Xmas Pressies to open than me!

She's already had nice new Auto Fluid for her 17th birthday this year!

Also do you have a part number for the gasket you refer to above most appreciated, as you say always better to be prepared.

I used this gasket when I replaced the brake duty solenoid in mine earlier this year. Fitted gasket with just a smear of sealant,no leaks so far

I bought the Solenoid from USA Industries via eBay.

The Item Number was 321231703588 and the listing was for
JF506E Jatco Transmission 2-4 Brake Duty Pressure Solenoid N283 (99314)

The gasket from JP Auto Transmission was part number N228 25 03 for a
GASKET, PAN, JF506E (DURAPRENE) £10.33 incl p&p and Tim Collins was the helpful fella.
