Default 75 club 2.0 cdti, tourer. Blue and white smoke

I have just joined the forum after purchasing a 75 club ctdi tourer. I noticed the car seemed to be underpowered, although having never owned a 75 before, i didnt know what was normal. Then i noticed random blue smoke (oil) , and white (unburnt diesel). I was hoping it might be a severely choked egr valve, causing all this trouble. I stripped the egr to find what i suspected, the bore was down to a third of its original size. After an hours cleaning, and ultrasonics, i refitted it all to find the car struggled to start. I removed the vaccuum pipe and it started instantly! I messed around a bit, but decided to leave the vaccuum hose blanked for now. After test driving i found the car much more powerful, and you can faintly hear and feel the turbo now, this wasn't the case previously. I found the intercooler pipes slightly oily, although the car has not used any oil in 300 miles since purchase. The question is,, what is the problem with the car not running with vaccuum fitted, or do i leave it blank and fit a deleted egr pipe. As for the turbo, i am not convinced it is completely healthy, i had a runaway before, and i dont want another.

Search on here for:

*. Intercooler O Rings

*. PCV filter

*. MAFF issues.

If you stop the leak at intercooler, ensure PCV is not blocked and maybe unplug the MAFF to see if it improves. Your car may be original 116ps tune, which makes pulling out from roundabouts a bit more fun. A remap will sort that. The turbo's are very solid, it does not work hard as you have noticed, don't expect to be thrown back in seat, you can just about feel it kick in.

If the egr was in such a bad state, I bet the pcv filter is in the same condition. Have you checked the air cleaner also?

The turbo's on the diesels are Mitsubishi, are very reliable, and don't usually cause problems.

As above the intercooler seals probably need replacing with Vitron ones, the originals swell and cause oil around the bottom of the intercooler hose.

Hi Raymie.
As above check the intercooler O-rings and replace with Viton ones, depending on how the EGR was cleaned you may have damaged diaphragme in the EGR?

Also if the EGR was clogged up so will the manifold & the MAP sensor, remove the manifold from the car remove the seals, once removed then take off the MAP sensor bolted to the side of the manifold clean that with a rag sprayed with carb cleaner do not poke anything into the hole of the MAP sensor.

Clean out the manifold you can use oven cleaner/ or engine cleaner leave it soaking for at least a couple of hours more if you can, then jet wash it out until clean inside refit the seals can be reused.

Check & replace the PCV filter and air filter, then report back to the thread

Thanks for all the replies, any pics of the intercooler seals? And yes i had a quick look at the pcv valve, it was in a mess, i will order a new one and revisit this, the inlet manifold was quite oily too. As for the turbo,, it certainly seems like it has an easy time, compared to my audi a4 tdi.

Hi Raymie.
here you go link below but you can get to them better if you remove the front bumper, I do them regular at our meets as I have the bends already made up with the Viton O-rings attached so swap them over in about 10 minutes.

Viton O-rings can be purchased here.

when washing the inlet manifold, expect a heck of a lot of dirty water to come out

Looks like i spoke too soon,, after topping up the oil, 750ml, i noticed blue smoke, a lot!! When driving along even under light load. After a mile or so it just stopped. When a reached my destination i revved the engine at a standstill, but not a drop of smoke. On the way home, before i parked, the smoke reappeared. I havent changed the really oily pcv oil separator yet, i hope it is this and nothing more sinister.
