Default Veneer

Just getting round to fettling my new palace of fun and came across an oddity, or so it seems to me, that is curious.
The veneer on the three sections of the dash is from two different shades. Airbag is dark, middle section and eyebrow and lower section is light, and right hand section is the same as the airbag - dark. Would this be a random bit of the part supply line or is it likely to have been specified by the purchaser? The distribution seems purposeful and quite attractive but doubts persist... In daylight the right hand section behind the wheel is exactly the same shade as the airbag. I wasn‘t aware that it would have been on the order sheet.

Looks to my eyes as if someone changed the airbag cover, possibly to a real one with the "Airbag" stencil Either that or it's been deployed

Yes, I thought that Ron but the other side being the same shade it seemed odd. I also noticed a slight wrinkling in the covering of the A pillar, you can just make it out in the pics, but thought that might have been done with the installing of the phone system (in the other pic). As the car is an '02' the pieces are wood so it all seems genuine. It's niggling me!

I'm with Ronnie on this one, all the early cars I have seen the three wooden dash pieces have been a pretty good match, you could always remove the airbag cover and see if the torx screws look like they have had a torx bit inside them

Mine is the other way round, much lighter on the airbag.

However, I fitted it in place of the light oak so maybe it's an odd set I bought.

Wraymond,

Just because its an 02 does not mean its real veneer. My guess its been changed by a previous owner.

Why not swap it with Wraymond's one then?

Thanks Ken, I was aware of the dates of the changes and as the car has a vin ending in 222959 and the 'Airbag' is not recessed I'm pretty sure of the material.

Actually I quite like the contrast and the shade of the other end being the same made me curious. If the bag is deployed, surely the cover wouldn't get damaged would it? I wonder if the cover be removed easily.
