Tyre Pressure
Recently purchased a Vauxhall Viva and put new tyres on the front. They both seem to lose pressure slowly between 2-4 psi weekly. Can you fit inner tubes to the tyres to stop pressure loss or is it wheel damage causing this loss?
Many thanks Lindsay |

It could be the condition of the rims thats causing a slow leak, if it's an original Viva (1963-1979) and not one of the new ones and it's on standard wheels you should be able to fit inner tubes if you wish.

More than likely will be rust/corrosion on the rims or a leaking valve (soap and water test to produce bubbles will tell you where it is leaking). Tube fitting on tubeless rims is a last resort which is often frowned upon as a permanent solution.

Tubes should never be used with wheels with the humps for tubeless radial tyres. The tube can be damaged or weakened during fitting, with catastrophic results should it blow at high speed. This was the advise from both Michelin and Rover engineers I worked with. Due to the high pressure needed to seat the tyre over the hump the tube is pressed hard against the wheel and tyre. As the tyre seats the tube is locally stretched as it cannot evenly move. This can result in local weakening or failure. If it fails you know about it , but should it weaken you cannot say if or when it will do so.

The easiest and safest solution here is to visit any tyre fitters and tell them what’s happening. They’ll reseat the tyres, cleaning the inner rim if required. I’m planning on doing this with my winter set. All 4 are losing pressure to some extent - bubbles apparent between the rim and tyre.
