From what I understand, because the tester could not find the manufactures plate, the default was to apply the new values, are these stricter than what would apply normally.

Its bad, i have MOT'd a lot of 75 diesels and the average is 0.6 on the opacity test.

Time to start cleaning

And don't forget to give the engine a good thrash on the way to the MOT test centre.

A lot of soot can build up if the car is just used to pootle around town, and when the tester revs it that can cause a fair bit of smog.

Find a nice quiet road or the m/way if stuck, take it upto 4000 rpm in second gear, quickly, for about half a mile. Do this twice on the way to the mot. Guaranteed pass.

I have become a bit concerned over the appetite for the "No Advisories" stories on some posts.
Been testing for a while with over 1500 tests behind me, and I must state that although our cars are clearly well built and a good design (Mostly) the concept that things like surface corrosion on subframes, brake pipes & ferrules, bushes with slight play, minor oil leaks etc are either ignored, or totally missed. The "Old Parking Brake" just meeting efficiency and so on are regulars recorded on the vts on much later cars. So either cars are not properly tested, or these "No Advisory" cars are utter minters.
My tester status is green, and intend to stay that way.
DVSA have systems in place to keep on top of testers, their habits and compliance.
Just to keep folks in the loop !

Mind you John, I tend to spend a few days "going over" any car I present for test, and I'm more than aware of what items are tested, and what is likely to cause problems.

This however doesn't preclude any issues, my ZT which went in a couple of weeks back, had had more than it's fair share of remedial works done, new brake pipes, upper rear arms, four new tyres, strut top bearings among others.

I decided to fit new festoon bulbs to the number plate lamps as the originals were looking decidedly, dark.

Off up to the VTS after washing and cleaning the outside, and a quick hoover out of the interior, drops the keys into the garage reception, and wandered off along the road to get a sandwich.

Anyway, the car was a pass with minor defects, one number plate lamp had decided to go off, no not the new bulb, but the connection between the bulb holder and PCB had failed

That is the first time in five years of owning that car that there has been any issue at test time, and no not a "friendly tester", the car has been checked by a least three different testers, at two completely independent VTS.

As to the original title of this post, the opacity limits achieved by the OP's car "passed" the pre 2008 limits by the skin of it's teeth, however the tester who performed the test, obviously didn't look at/chose to ignore the VIN plate manufacturers limit, as it would have certainly failed, and quite rightly too.......there must be cobs of coal falling out of the exhaust pipe with the figures quoted.

I may be wrong, but I watched him test the emissions on mine. He seemed to enter the reg of my car into his machine and it came up with the figures it needed.
