Default Electric engine preheater

Anyone fitted an aftermarket electric engine preheater? They are quite cheap and would fit into space that would otherwise be occupied by the eberspacher heater...

The ones in or cars are Webastos, not Ebersprachers, which particular electric heaters do you have in mind?

Most of the aftermarket ones are 1.5 - 3KW and are 240 volts.
If you've got access to an appropriate mains power supply then it could be an alternative.

I'd want one from a reputable manufacturer though wouldn't want to fit a spurious one.

Webasto do a range of them for various cars perhaps there's a suitable one that could be utilised.

Just about all cars in Sweden are fitted with an engine (often cabin too) pre-heater. Here's the kind I have
http://old.defa.com/en/automotive/wa...engine_heater/

A bit expensive initially but I wouldn't be without the comfort they give.

Regards

A piece of old rag, nailed to a length of 2" x2", doused in diesel and set alight under the engine was the way the Russian truckers used to do it on the services at Hartshead Moor Services, before the police and fire service explained that there were huge fuel tanks underground nearby!!!!
These are more like it:-

I would not thought it worth fitting an electric heater when a FBH can be fitted to easily and cheaply to a diesel.

Couple of things scare me about that 3kw heater. The first is mine is rated at 600w as they are usually combined with cabin heaters of perhaps 1200w. My 10 amp fuses can handle that output, will your 13 amp fuses handle yours? Perhaps but don't put the kettle on if it's on the same circuit.

My Defa heater is located at the lowest point, presumably because heat rises, but your 3kw is designed to be mounted at the top of the cooling system? I'm sure the neighbours cats will appreciate your nice warm bonnet.

These Defa systems are well know by insurers, the sockets weatherproof, the cable armoured. What's your insurance company going to say when they here of the installation.

Just some thoughts
