Default How long does diesel last

I have over 1/2 a tankful in my donor car. Seems a shame. What is its shelf life?

I read online somewhere that diesels have a life span of up to 1 year.

Diesel fuel nowadays does not 'keep' for long. Low sulfer diesel does not keep for long because of the action of bacteria in the fuel. The life of stored diesel is around 6 to 12 months.fa

Look at some canal boat shops/sites they use an additive that kills the bacteria as their diesel does tend to stand.

They use biocides to combat the formation of 'living sludge' that has sometimes damaged engines that live in fuel tanks/filters.

May just be that anyway(millers that is), boaters rarely drain their tanks and rarely have engine problems. Not that they have too many common rail motors.

I was always led to believe years and that's from a farmer friend of mine that has old tractors that sometimes don't see the light of day for a few years at a time

Your farmer friend will definitely see problems with the low sulphur or as it's commonly know "bio diesel". The filters, fuel lines and tank will clog up with a black stringy looking growth. The life of diesel fuel now is six months max, we sell an additive that farmers can add to their tanks when they fill them. Cost is around £120 for 5ltrs and you need two to treat a 1,000 lt tank
