Looking at "milk prices" on Google - it would seem that increased prices for dairy products (including butter, cheese, yoghurts etc.) are here to stay. Listening to farmer friends they say that when the supermarkets INCREASE prices, little if any of that increase works it's way down to the guy with the cows. Conversely, if the supermarkets want to REDUCE prices, the cost of that reduction ends up being borne by the guy with the cows

We still have a milkman & it's 62p pint semi skimmed.
'orrible cold & sleety out there. I ventured out to the wheelie bin earlier & that's as far as I've been. We're having some seafood linguine balanced food 'ping' meal thing for tea tonight they were reduced by 50% so my missus grabbed a load the other day. They sound a bit diety to me There are meat & tater pies in the fridge just in case

Our place is opposite the fields of a modern dairy farm. The buildings are on the other side of a small hill and it's interesting to see how the fields have been divided up into areas. Some of the boundaries are old hedges but lots are electric fences and each area has a roadway that all link up back to the farm buildings.
The farmer puts the cows on an area for about a week and the cows automatically follow the open gates back to the selected area after milking. After a week or so, before the grass in the area is turned to mush, the cows are moved to the next area, allowing the grass to recover. They sort of progress around the hill in a clockwise direction over the weeks that they're out to grass. Each area has a water supply and even an underground system that pumps the cows effluent from the yard back into the ground to help build soil nutrition. The sad thing is that though there are some old hedges remaining, lots have obviously gone and the open areas, dotted with electric fencing, are almost as uninteresting and sterile as the enormous arable fields. There are very, very few trees too. All seems to have been sacrificed to efficient milk production. There again, if the farmer is getting an abysmal price then efficiency is the way to improve the margin and at least keep them in business.

Afternoon all.
Turns out that my builder, Steve Nute, was a professional footballer. Played for Exeter City as their goalkeeper from 1978 to 1981. He has made an amazing job on the house. Even had a couple of neighbours remark how it has transformed the house. I asked him for the bill and he said there was no rush, he’ll pop it down one day next week. We have had lovely sunshine all day but has started to turn chilly this evening. Pork chop, mash n beans for dinner.
