Default big gear box bang auto box

please any info is much apprieciated
rover 75 2.0 v6 automatic
when selecting from park to reverse theres a bang
and from reverse to drive theres a bang
had it code read and it gave the code p1748 A/T 2-4 Brake duty soleniod open/short circuit to battery /ground ????

Hi, and to the club.

Did you have it code read on a generic tester or on a Testbook/T4 reason being is that sometimes generic testers give out false codes.

If it is correct then it's one of the solenoids that operate the gearbox, these are located under a cover on the front of the gearbox. There's nine solenoids in total, check the wiring connectors to the gearbox for damage or corrosion.

If you aren't up to attempting it, then best to take it to an auto tranmission specialist. If it is the solenoid that's faulty they should be able to replace it.

Other common cause of a bang when changing gear is the rear engine mounting.

The description of the code seems consistent with the fault.

I would read Brake Duty as the pressure regulator (which varies the pressure by varying the duty cycle) and if this had failed shifts would be at full pressure hence the bang.

I'll try to have a look this evening.

However I echo Russ's statements.
