Default OBD details

Hello,
Whilst being a regular visitor to the Forum, I now have a problem of my own.
I accessed the OBD over the weekend to see what the actual temp of the engine was, as the heater was stone cold. My first attempts weren’t successful and I ended up with all the clocks and gauge needles going full cycles and back to zero.
Yesterday, I read on the internet about BMW’s having a hidden electronic switch on their OBD system, and wonder whether I have caught a similar switch on my car’s OBD.
A few years ago, I can recollect a Forum entry with all the link details the OBD it controlled. Is this still available on the Forum?
Any help will be much appreciated.
Geoff.
