Default can ECU be reused

I'm having to break a 1.8. Can the ECU be wiped clean and then reprogrammed and reused on a CDT or CDTI?
Will my CDT or CDTI ECU be required to get any information from and then be transferred to the ECU from the 1.8?

If I were to totally destroy the ECU from the CDT or CDTI, not on purpose I hassen to add can the "new" ecu still be programmed?

The ECU in a petrol car is physically different to the ones in diesels, I would guess that when 'virginised' (taken back to factory settings?) it may be that the internal gubbins are different too. But for proper advice ask Marinabrian or Trikey.
I have 'Christines' ecu (2.0 cdti) and want it on Kim (2.0 cdti)
That will work after being virginised. The bracket in the plenum that the ecu fits in are different sizes so petrol to diesel most probably won't work.

They are probably different as petrol ECU's are sealed where as diesel ECU's are more open.

You cannot use a MEMS3 ECM in place of a DDE4 I'm afraid Ian.

If you are concerned that in the event the DDE4 is totally destroyed that the information cannot be rewritten to a replacement......then don't, I do this all of the time
