Default NHS should be for treatment that is needed...

...not stuff that is wanted... procedures that are wanted should be paid for privately... what is beginning to happen now is going to put a great deal of pressure on the NHS; let's not forget what the NHS was established to do!

Who do you think should decide which is needed/wanted ? Its all very open to interpretation. Personally I'm happy to let those in the health trusts decide.

So am I - I would just like to see them have some balls and say to those idiots that get totally bladdered at the weekends and then have the NHS Vomit Buses come round and pick them out of the gutter - that THAT particular service is NOT free at the point of delivery and they will have to pay for it.

I do not think that the £2.7Billion the NHS paid in 2011 on scrapping the dregs of society out of the gutter due entirely to their own selfish and stupid behaviour is what the founding fathers of the NHS had in mind.

If you have a motor accident, there is a charge on your insurance for NHS services, anything YOU do (drink, rock climb, tombstoning etc) that causes such a visit should also be chargeable. Also if you visit A&E with a non emergency (ie one you could fix somewhere else such as a pharmacy or doctor), then such persons should be turned away promptly and in no uncertain terms.

Sounds good on the face of it, however it might well be difficult to enforce and who's to say what risky behaviour should be charged for? Smoking, long term drinking, playing certain sports etc. It's a slippery slope.

Take the chap that has unknown heart issues, he runs and keeps fit then all of a sudden falls down with a heart attack during sport activity. How can you decide what happens to him when he thinks he's doing the best for his health?
It's a really grey area and something that only professionals can answer.

To me anything that is known to cause problems and yet someone continues to use/take it should be reason enough for treatment to be witheld or charged for.

So, drinking (to excess), smoking, illegal drug taking. Those are all things we choose to do and so it should be our responsibility.

it doesn't help when you have to wait up to 3 weeks for a doctors appointment and your local surgery tells you to go to A&E for non emergency treatment!

mark.
