Joint caliper? Just a guess.

Google says Groz Caliper and Jenny Caliper or spring caliper

Definitely caliper(s). Screw thread is for accuracy, should slide around job without binding or rattle (technical terms of course) and without losing size for multiple measurements (for comparative purposes). One of my several apprentice pieces in 1958 including screw cutting and spring hinge. Lovely job.

These are external measuring callipers. You set them to the diameter or thickness you want to measure, with no gap between either point. Then measure between points on a steel ruler. You can also get callipers the measure internally. Bores, slots, gaps etc.

Real blast from the past- Mr Woods the metalwork teacher of fond memory- he used to throw objects, files, bits mild steel etc etc in the class room, never hit anyone but kept use concentrated. I made a stock? ( the thing that hold a tap)? Much metal turning and filing, and a toasting fork. Chris.S.

Threw up a few memories that, outside calipers. Thinking now of inside calipers, depth gauge, scribing block, vee clamps, plumb bob. I think most guys on here who did an apprenticeship made a scribing block at college.

Couldn't resist! One of my attempts from Week 2 Apprentice Instrument Artificer, ICI Runcorn, 1958.
Hand vice, no - not that kind, cut from square section steel billet, hand sawn and filed, drilled and cold riveted by hand. Screw thread (internal and external) on lathe and cross-knurled handle. No pre-machined or finished material. Much used ever since.
