Default BMW diesels catch fire

Yesterday's Guardian carries a horrifying report of low mileage BMW Series 5's suddenly catching fire: they blame the EGR valve, but have offered no recompense. As I like many others - till now - happily run BMW engined R75's, should we be worried?

I would be more concerned about the LSM catching fire (As we have seen this a few times) Rather than the engine, I have not seen any issues that suggest the diesel engine would be a problem.

I attended a 3 series last year on a breakdown where the owner said he had seen smoke from under the bonnet ( can't remember the year of the car) He said it had been on fire as he saw glowing embers and emptied a bottle of water over it. There is a sound proof cover on the front of the engine and the EGR is under it and it set fire to the cover !

no. The engine in the car concerned is 10 years younger than ours for a start. The design, and location is different (longitudinal as opposed to transverse - may or may not be a factor).

Article states, fluid leaking from the EGR components. Whilst coolant is flammable under certain circumstances, I cannot imagine it being much of an issue on our cars. In the comments of the article, someone also mentions the build up of soot within the EGR being an issue to catching fire, adds another reason for bypass.

You would think that with Adblue and DPF regen, these modern engines would run cleaner, or is it the case that manufacturers now rely on these pollution control measures rather than build clean-burning engines? Always amazed how low the emissions readings are for the CDT.

I have to agree the CDT going from its emission readings does not deserve the rating that it has. Though I for one am not going to argue the point, I will just drive and enjoy.

They do run cleaner.

Unlike testing petrol engines, the diesel MOT doesn't analyse the emissions, it is just a visible smoke test.

They've been running a lot cleaner for a while, on my last MOT the Volvo D5 euro 4 which has the same 1.50 limit as 75/ZT diesel produced 0.00, that's right nothing!

Not bad for a car that's 13 years old and with almost 200,000 miles on the clock

Ok it's got a DPF which has never regenerated while I've owned it and is still doing well with regard to the soot levels in it.
At least I'm not having to buy blue coloured pee water to put in it
