Default October 2018 M4 crash with mini bus

Saw this on the news yesterday.

Lorry ploughs into mini bus killing 3 with one or more with life changing injuries.

Easy to blame lorry driver for going into back of mini bus but here is apparently the truth, I only refer to footage, nothing else

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-eng...fatal-m4-crash

Lorry driver has been cleared of wrong doing.

They showed the entire footage from the lorry previously. The Lorry driver had no chance whatsoever to avoid the collision. He was overtaken by another HGV who then pulled in front of him and blocked his view. Then this lorry swerved to avoid the minibus leaving him no chance to avoid it himself.

Incredibly sad - and the question has to be why and what caused the minibus to come to a halt in lane one?

Was blocking off whole sections of the motorway hard shoulder for work to be done on it to convert it to a “smart motorway” (with no hard shoulder ) sensible as this left the driver of the minibus no opportunity of a safe zone to pull into?

I think Ford are looing at the transit to determine why it stopped and Highways England have been asked about the barrier and no place of safety.

This of course could happen on a smart motorway where the hard shoulder becomes lane 1.

This type of accident will sadly become more common as so called "smart' motorways spread further and there is no safe haven for stranded vehicles leaving them no option but to stop in a live lane.

I think the group of folk who thought up the 'smart' motorway idea should be made to sit on the hard shoulder as traffic goes by.

They would then see what a farcical idea the 'smart' motorway is, my heart goes out to the camera operators in the control rooms that have to witness incidents like this.

Totally agree Ian - and this is why I see nothing “smart” about the concept at all!

I've never liked the idea of "smart" motorways since the first day they were spoken about.
