How did you remove the ancillary belt without a jack?

I relieved the tensioner and slipped the belt off to try and work out where the noise was coming from.

Cheers, Dom

Sorry, I'm still confused Dom. How did you remove the road wheel and wheelarch liner without a jack?

OK Dom, I get the picture.

There is a specialist near you actually: cb750chris in Portsmouth. Why not ask for his help?

Alternatively, retrieve your tools from your folks' house and do the work yourself. You'll cut the estimated bill in half.

I know that you're feeling despondent, we all do in these circumstances. I'd say give yourself a couple of days to think about your options and don't assume anything, particularly the worst. The likelihood is that this noise is going to be a rattly tensioner or idler wheel and I write from experience!

As for the cost, what sort of "cheap runaround" do you think you're going to get for less than £700? You'll need to budget for the inevitable repair bills on an unknown quantity.
