Default Help!! My beauty won't start

2.0 Ltr V6 Mk 1 on an 03 plate.

For the 2 yrs Ive owned her she has never missed a beat. Last night, all was well, but this morning she won't start. Engine spins fine, but absolutley no sign of firing up.

My best thoughts so far are:

Fuel filter unscrewed (I have the orange clip in the glve box - DOH!)
Cam shaft sensor
Battery (stlill original battery as far as I can tell)

Any other things I should be thinking about?

I'm at work at the mo, but will be scratching my head this evening.

Thanks,

Cliff

First thing to check IMHO would be the Fuel Filter and get that Orange Clip fitted regardless.

If Battery any other Indications, Flashing lights etc?

Check Plenums as advised, these are the easy first things.

Yep, I'd plump for the Clip too.

Thanks for the replies folks - I'm just back in from work and hadn't had a chance to check the forums since posting first thing this morning.

I can now confirm that there are no flashing lights etc, so looks like the battery can be discounted. The plenums are nice and dry (and clear!) so it's not that.

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced it will be the orange clip. I bought one nearly a year ago, and decided I would wait 'till the next service to get it fitted (as I would probably make a hash of removing the back seat etc). What a plonker! To make things worse, I only filled up last Sunday with £62 worth of petrol!

My question now, is do I attempt a fix myself (I'm off work on Friday), or call the RAC and let them have a go (I have Homestart, but never used it, so not sure how much work the RAC would attempt). Any thoughts?

Hi Cliff, sorry to hear you're out of action, that will never do.

For what it's worth mine wouldn't start about 4 months ago, and I HAD to get to London A.S.A.P, so I took the wifes Beetle, leaving her to call out the R.A.C, who Knew exactly what to do and were done in no time at all.

It too was a back seat off, fuel pump issue. They must get a lot of these types of callout on our cars.

The only thing about calling them out is that you loose a bit of discount when you re-new if you make a call, but then that's what we pay our subscription for in the first place.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Paul.

Thanks Paul, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear.

I'll call the RAC on Friday when I'm off (I can use my wife's car tommorow) and hope for someone as helpful as you had.

Many thanks,

Cliff

Just a quick update for anyone interested.

The RAC chap came today, and confirmed that it did indeed appear to be the suspected "orange clip" problem. He hadn't sorted one himself before, but nonetheles took the job on and before long had the filter screwed back up with the new clip in place.

The car still wouldn't run however. It was now getting petrol (which it wasn't before), and would attempt to fire up, but there was insufficient fuel pressure to keep it running. The RAC chap checked his work several times (looking for badly seated seals etc) but could see nothing wrong. All in all, he spent 3 hours trying to sort it for me, before having to admit defeat and give me a tow to my nearest (ex) MGR dealer, who have promised to look at it next Wednesday.

Not the result I wanted, but I can't fault the efforts of the RAC patrolman - a friendly guy who really did his best to sort the problem.

I'll let you know what the dealer says in due course.
