Default differences in spec pre to post facelift?

just looked on the russian parts site to look at gearknob differences, and noticed that the selector mechanism seems to be quite difference pre and post facelift. How massive are the differences in real life, anyone who works on pulling apart these things?!

Also noticed on the russian site that the post chassis number 307xxx transition manual gearknobs for the later gearstick are/were available in walnut as well as light and dark oak (UKJ000390ANV) Anyone EVER seen one in anything other than Light oak?

I think the difference in the manual gear knobs amounts to the shape of the holes. The facelift shaft has a flat ground along one side, so it's 'D' shaped in section. The knobs have a correspondingly shaped bore. The circular bore knobs fit the D-shaped shafts, but not the other way around (unless you drill them out to fit).

thats useful - but I was more getting at the hardware underneath - the pics look very different for the actual shifting mechanisms.

The gear shift mechanisms are (very) different making it a pain if you own a pre-facelift and need to replace the shift mechanism as the originals are no longer available.

aaah. thats what I came to realise.

I'm one of those with the underpinnings of the new in the pre-facelift (321,000ish chassis), so I suppose thats one good thing. The change and the feel of the clutch are lighter though than the earlier cars, I'm finding.

I wonder why they redeveloped it - perhaps its used on other models and a cheaper system, as per a lot of the other changes?
