I didn't try a torch though does yours not alter at all?

That's weird, mines only changes with the Nav brightness control, lights or dimmer has no effect ???
Been out tonight and the screen is overbright in the dark.
What MK4 operating system software version have you installed ?.... mine is V27
When the MK3 Nav was installed the screen behaved as yours.
Maybe try a power down/ battery disconnect tomorrow.

Both mine are at V28 with this as the splash screen

Might be nothing but go back to the mk3 and try it a couple of times with the night option turned on and off

Default Update on MK4 installation

Removed Mk4 Nav and repowered car.
TV tuner took over control of the graphics
Had the colour selections as with the MK3 Nav system.
Think I have been havering in my previous comments regarding night screen brilliance ....

I would guess the dimming action I noted was a change to the night colour, which was lower brilliance colour selection.
When night and day colours were set the same colour, turning lights on made no difference to the display (panel dimmer on max)

Changing the dimmer to minimum reduced the screen brightness a little... but you could not see the instruments.

Ipod tag display was back to normal.

Reinstalled the MK4, this returned the colour selection to the Mk4 two colours system. The colours set by the TV were lost.

Rechecked with lights on, the dimmer was operating, but as before had little effect.

The Ipod Tag display had problems again. Some picture below...
The first shows the problem on the display. Note small font "Track" The tag shows about four character and then its is overlayed again with the same tag.
It was found if the "Select" button was pressed, sometimes the problem would be corrected... well almost.
Picture two show the artist tag, this displayed normally.
Picture three shows the track title which is first displayed in a small font. This reverts to the normal large font, shown in picture four (scrolling)

Picture five is shown with the MK3 installed and tag displayed for reference

I suppose I will have to buy an ICE Link now .

Pass on the display dimming bit I know the one in my CDT does not work as well in that respect to the Roverised version, a small price to pay imho though, but it does seem daft the BMW system does not offer the night mode option as well isn't it

As for the ICE Link any possibility this is a firmware thing?

As I have said before the ICElink Plus is a little bit flaky at times, usually when you have been messing about causing spikes on the battery supply.
It would seem that Denison are no longer selling this interface in the USA, they have now moved to a system called "Dice", supposed to be a straight plugin replacement for the IceLink Plus. See X5forum...
http://www.x5world.com/bavarian-soun...highlight=dice

"As for the ICE Link any possibility this is a firmware thing?".... Not sure where the problem is, but would guess it's caused by the MK4 operating system.
On your 16:9 and 4:3 screens is the small font "Track" message displayed in CD mode, if so what position, can you make it disappear with the Select button ?

On the brightness problem, will look at hacking the operating system as described on the X5 Nav forum to display brighter colours. This may make the screen way overbright at night. Will look at the 4:3 display and see if I can install a photocell controlled circuit in series with the backlight..... Or try find a 16:9 screen at a reasonable price. Very interested on how your 16:9 performs at night and what happens when torch illuminates the photocell.

Installing the Mk4 computer has ended up with me spending more money.

16:9 Tv/video tuner, BM24 Radio and 16:9 monitor now all fitted and working.

Good/bad things..... one plus/minus... minor, five plus/minus... major

+++++ Speed of Mk4 Nav computer
+++++ BM24 radio audio output... big improvement when used with Ipod Icelink system
++++ BM24 Radio available station display
++++ Ipod text display now ok, fitting the BM24 radio resolved tag display problem.
+++ Screen brightness on 16:9 monitor
+++ TMC always on

----- Cost of upgrade, Monitor £300, TV 16:9 Tuner £130, BM24 Radio £111, Mk4 £380.
---- Upgrading only the Mk4 Nav system gave problems with the 4:3 Monitor...
not bright enough in daylight and over bright at night.
...Problems with Icelink Plus/ Ipod Tag display,
-- Lost my Light Oak wood finished monitor.... back to black monitor.

No major difficulties carrying out upgrade.

16:9 Tv Tuner may have not have been required.
The 4:3, 16:9 display option was not shown on any menu until the 16:9 monitor was fitted.
.... Had seen on other threads that the option would be shown on 4:3 monitor if the TV tuner was capable.... not true in my case.

Little bit surprised on the location of the blue and white sockets on the 16:9 E46 monitor, they were on the side, had not noticed that before.

Keith,

Installed IBus interface socket.... will now get back to looking at the Ibus data.

Still got to install plug to interface with my ELM interface box which will allow me to monitor ECU communications to/from my ACR4 system.

I am knobbled for the next week.... got visitors staying with us.... been banned from my workshop !
