Chatting to Brian, it appears that double DIN head units are mounted rather differently to single ones, insofar as they don't actually sit in a cage as such, but rather need to be attached to a substructure of some description.

As ever, a picture is worth a 1000 words, and the link below shows someone fitting a double DIN head unit to their E46 BMW:

http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=359837

Effectively, the bezel, in Brian's words, is like the frame around a picture...

Interestingly, if you look at Geraint's picture above, you'll see that there is a shelf already there in his car - to locate the Hi Line navigation display unit that he's replacing...

If its just a frame there are no doubt plenty of fabricators around that would probably make one over here. With all the modifying involved and finishing I think I might get a single din unit with motorised screen.

The modifying I can handle. Its the finishing that drives me up the wall because i'm no good!

Will have to disagree with this - every double DIN unit I have looked at recently, including some of the current JVC stuff has a cage just like a single DIN device, just twice as big.

By the sounds of it this facia is not going to be a viable option for a modern double DIN stereo install, so I'm out, will stick with single DIN units and my Rover facia adapter with the shelf.

Really? You can tell that I am still at a very early stage on my research on this. Over all, I would agree with you; having a complete solution straight out of the box is more desirable than mucking about with something else. I think that Brian can accomodate this. Moreover, I think that he would be able to put in a mounting lip if we wanted one - but whether this fascia panel could take the full weight of a double DIN HU is another question.

No problem if you're out - I may still proceed with this, and leave the option open for others to follow if they're interested

I think I will make something from a sheet of Alloy, if I go a DD route in my 260. I had the single din unit out over the weekend not a bad bezel as it is

I'm thinking of using aluminium and the covering it with the leather sort of fabric the console is covered in ... not sure what that material is called! (Vynil??)
