![]() I started my car today (V6 2 Ltr) and I could hear a loud ticking sound. Up with the bonnet, and the sound got louder ! It appeared to be coming from the area of inlet manifold. I switched engine off, but the loud ticking continued, along with a whirring sound. I really expected it to go off bang !
Right, settle down and find out what and where it is. Heart in mouth I restarted engine, and let it tick (haha) over. Loud ticking noise still there. Def coming from inlet manifold. Listening carefully and feeling around I realised it was coming from balance vis motor. I unplugged it and the ticking stopped. I then set about removing balance vis. 4 screws and it was off. I then switched on ign to see what happened. Vis rotated without any ticking. I then removed the buterfly valve itself to examine it. Then I spotted the problem. The drive from the vis (square peg) fits into a matching hole in the valve.which is plastic. the plastic on the valve had broken, and the vis drive was just rotating, doing nothing other than making this loud ticking noise. Now I knew what the problem was, how to solve it. I spoke to the 'genius' who is stocktake. Yes, he said. Not unkown. The plastic goes brittle and breaks, especialy if valve is stiff. The problem now is to source a butterfly valve, which are no longer available, only maybe from scrappie. So the moral here is, if your car is ticking like a bomb, check your balance vis. Finally, if any one has a butterfly valve or where to get one, I'm desparate. ![]() |

![]() I have seen two of these failures.
We had replaced balance vis motors and the latest one I fitted lasted a whole 800 miles before failure occured. The first time I had seen this was on my old ZS. Both vehicles had a flap that was not stiff or gummed up. The fault I believe is in the vis motor itself not actually tripping the microswitch as it should. Child part not available so its either a scrap yard or kerrrching on a new plenum. |
