Fan problems
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have a rover 75 diesel Classic. I am in North London. I have seen various other posts about fans continuing on high setting a long time after switching off the engine and draining the battery. This is my situation as well. A mechanic confirmed my own diagnosis (for a price) - the fan control box is faulty. I can only find one sold with a new fan motor. The supplier wants over £400. Does anyone have knowledge of other options? relatively local places that might be less pricey or somewhere that will supply just the control box without the motor (unless there's a really good reason they must come together)? Or even somewhere they know how to actually fix the thing? Presently I'm driving it around with the fan's fuse pulled out. But only short distances. Thanks in anticipation. |

Provided the fins on your radiator aren't rotted off and you're not towing/driving slowly up steep hills or using air con (if fitted as Classics sometimes didn't), you'll probably find you don't need the fan anyway as the diesel in normal use doesn't generate that much heat. That's not saying don't fix it (you'll get one from a scrapyard cheaply), but you can still drive around without one at this time of year. And no, the control boxes aren't coded to the fan or anything silly so can be swapped independently though make sure you get one from the same type of fan (later ones had a large metal resistor fixed to the plastic fan shroud, early ones didn't) and from a diesel as the petrol ones won't work for you. You can also check if any of the relays in your own are stuck 'on' with a multimeter.
