Smile Civil engineering and architectural acheivements.

What are your favourite structures? Who are your favourite engineers/ architects? I thought I'd post this having been amazed at how quickly THE SHARD has been constructed; so big it can be seen for miles! My favorite structure is the first SEVERN BRIDGE. The first suspension bridge with an aerodynamic deck; a truly beautiful bridge! The engineers I admire most are Sir Gilbert Roberts, and William Brown and the architect I admire most is Percy Thomas...

Architect: Lutyens for Castle Drogo probably wins my top spot. Having said that there are plenty of architects who's work I love (though not many in the current generation).

Engineer: got to be Brunel, for Clifton Suspension Bridge, Paddington Station, Royal Albert Bridge and the Great Western, Great Britain (got married on her) and Great Eastern. Mind you Paxton should get a mention for The Crystal Palace, a very elegant design...

If Percy Thomas is the sort of architect you like then you should visit Plymouth, as after the war the city centre was entirely rebuilt, with high quality architecture (particularly along the main throughfare). As a result it's got probably the finest collection of 1950s architecture in the UK (sadly unloved by the City Council).

I K Brunel has to be my engineer. I'm not really into architecture and architecture, I just like buildings with character no matter who designed them. I quite like some of the Grand Designs projects, my favorite of which was the Charcoal burning guy, who built himself a home from the wood he had felled around him. Now that is an achievment - looks good, extremely novel. I really did not think he had it him in to produce something so nice when they started filming, but obviously they do not show the falured projects.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

The drunk who designed the M6 Jctn with the M6 toll road. And all the numpties who actually built it that way!!

For those who never use it:- The M6 toll (going South) branches off left from the M6, So a simple fork was called for.. But.. Instead the Toll road goes straight on for about a mile then goes left up and over the M6 which has been rerouted to the left of it's original route....

I wonder what the cost of that fiasco was....

Or how about the new lifting bridge in Poole Dorset. The council had a "feasibility study" done by an outside Company at a cost of £100K. The report said it was a bad idea. So naturally the Council went ahead with it..

I now hear that the length of the arms is such that the structure may not be able to support them........ The bridge design may need to be modified....Erm, they have been building it for about 18 months!.

Reminds me of the bridge over the A1 at Seaton Burn, they built the framework & then when they poured the concrete in it couldn't take the weight & bent the bridge

One of my favourite buildings albeit not particularly attractive was the now demolished Trinity Square or "Get Carter" multi storey car park in Gateshead, designed by Owen Luder it was brutalist architecture but a very interesting building consisting of 2 stairwell towers with the car decks suspended between them with a restaurant perched ontop. The reastaurant was never opened (infact it was never finished) due to fire regulations I believe, many of the fixtures & fittings were lying on the floor inside having never been fixed or fitted

The old girl kept a couple of surprises for the demolition contractors, not one but two German bombs were nestled under her foundations!
