Clunk or twanging noise when moving the steering through the dead ahead position. Mine had only done 24k miles when it happened.

Ah, that's not it then Bernard. Mine has no clunk/twang when turning the steering wheel but it does have an extremely annoying 'donk' when going over surface bumps (e.g. poor road repairs, etc). Seems to be coming from front n/s area (or front centre) but I can't pinpoint it precisely. Mileage is 32k.

The wheel alignment chap yesterday thought it might be the strut but he hadn't actually heard it himself and was only going on my description. Lates changed the teardrop mount last weekend so it can't be that.

A very annoying noise.

I've got that too. I've given up trying to find it as it only occurs under rare conditions, doesn't seem to be getting worse and I'm fed up with lifting the car to investigate.

Hmm. If two of us have the same noise, then other members must have it too.

Here's my latest list of likely and not-so-likely candidates:
  • LH or RH engine mount (not the teardrop)
  • Anti-roll bar bush or mounting bracket
  • Strut assembly (any part thereof!!)
  • CV joint
  • Lower arm bush
  • Any other bush!
  • Undertray bouncing up & whacking something
  • Heat shield whacking something (although couldn't see anything suspect yesterday when car on lift)
  • Steering rack/column (?)
  • Some sort of animal living above the undertray
  • A.N. Other
Well, that just about covers everything!

I'm fed up with having to turn the radio/CD up just to drown out this pesky little knock.

Here is my top three

1 Drop link, cheapest, easyest, known to fail
2 Rear void bush on Front lower wishbone. Also known to fail at not too big a mileage Just done mine big difference in knocks going over bumps
3 Lower wishbone, known to wear not cheap but again known to wear.

Is this the drop link in No1 Dave? - if so how do I test the existing ones? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROVER-75-FRONT...1%7C240%3A1318

Got any part numbers for Nos 2 & 3? Or diagrams/pics/links?

Edit I just trawled thro my disc-change pics on the offchance and spotted this dodgy looking rubber (arrowed). Is it No2 on your list? Looks like a duffer to me (and it's on the n/s which is where I think the noise is coming from) - what do you think?

Drop links are a 15 min job. only two bolts but the top one can be a mare.
To check you can lay on your back and simply hold your hand over the top and or bottom joint whilts somebody else lifts up and pushes down on the car to simulate going over the bumps. the click / knock is usually heard/felt on the uppermost position. Alternativley remove the bottom joint and pull and push on the droplink, you will feel any wear. From mx experience it is the top joint that wears.
