Default Fan operation

I have a rover 75 53 plate 1.8T tourer, the fan has no resister fitted but I do find when the air con is selected the fan is constantly on full speed. Would replacing the brushes fix this or should I look at the relay (not sure where this is located) ? I am also worried about the taking the fan motor apart and finding the stator worn out, what is the likely hood of this if the car has done 55k miles?

I have the same fan unit as you, older type 2 speed fan, and there is very little info about them on the forum. It could be the brushes or the relay, either way the front bumper has to come off.

Trust me you will know when it is running on full speed it sounds like a plane taking off.

The fan should certainly run continuously, but at the low speed. Do you know it's the fast speed, or do you assume it is from the sound? The slow speed on the K18s is still pretty noisy.

If the motor brushes had worn out, the fan would run at the genuine fast speed, but cycle on-off-on every few seconds. If it's not doing that, the motor is probably fine.

The slow speed brush issue is prevalent in the 3-speed system fitted to the V6. The K18 always had a 2-speed version, with or without the resistor and I suspect it suffers far less from brush wear. From my readings, it seems that this particular question is rarely mentioned.

From what I have seen with an old two speed resistor free 1.8 fan that sat in my shed for a while:

The two speed 1.8 fan with NO resistor has very little noticable difference in either of the speeds. I would suggest if your fan runs when you call for the aircon, your fan is correct

it is very loud when the air con is on, you can defiantly hear the car coming. gives the car a sense of presents
