The mk1 had two fuel pumps and the early mk2's had these two. Was the latter mk2's that had one fuel pump. I know as i've got early mk2 with 2 and dad have later mk2 with one. No difference in quality just looks. The mk2 looks more modern IMHO but less aggressive that the mk1

I happen to be selling a mk 2 zt-t on here.

I like the mk1 as much as the mk2.

Mk1 very aggressive (more rover like as well)

mk2 very ooohhh (much more timeless front IMHO)

Went from a 306 hdi to my mk 2 zt-t - you'll love them!

Mk 1 for me all day long . What's the problem with 2 fuel pumps? when our kids in tank pump packed up it ran as happy as a sand boy with the one under the bonnet. He only noticed it had gone when he was faffing and he realised he couldn't hear it. If he only had one he would have been up slack alley.

Personally I prefer the ZR as a Mk1, but the ZS & ZT as the MK2 - don't know why

I have a MK2 ZT-T with no build quality issues as yet *touch wood*.

All i can say is that i love my mk2 ZT.

If BMW had nothing to do with it then why are there little 'tells' all over the car?

Because BMW gave Rover permission to use whatever parts and modify any existing designs they wanted when the 75 was being developed as they both belonged to the same company at the time.

When BMW pulled out there will have been an agreement for them to continue to supply those parts so that production would continue.

When the ZT and ZT-T were brought out they of course used those same parts.

Besides the M47 engine the BMW parts list isn't a large one, if production had continued many of these would have slowly been replaced with alternatives.
