Default Cannot get in-line thermostat deep enough

As my temp gauge has not seen 9 o'clock for some time I found and followed Artic's excellent article on how to fit it ( #1042)
Two problems. Not having a Dremel I had to get the manifold off to get to saw the hose clip off. Then despite plenty of lubricant, push, shove, curses - and being past the First Flush of Youth - I completely failed to get the thermostat the requisite 12mm deep. The copper nose is proud of the hose end. But poking a finger up the engine side there doesn't seem to be any obstruction and there is sufficient hose to firmly clamp it up. A run up the road shows that 9 o'clock now is restored, so please don't tell me I have to try again. The only solution I can think of is to dismantle it when the hose is hot and flexible, and hope I don't scald myself.

Another thing does trouble me: I can't ever see anyone getting it out again in the event of failure. It will have to be a new hose completely. So should I worry chaps?

I had a similar problem but managed to force it down enough in the end.
But after it was all put back together I kicked myself for not thinking of taking the top hose off completely and putting it in a bowl of hot water to soften the rubber

You really are better off with one of the bolt together stat housings... 5 mins to fit by just cutting the hose and a few minutes to change a stat again if needed...

There's no prerequisite depth. Providing it allows sufficient space for the hose to fit comfortably on the head outlet, it'll be fine. You really don't need Jubilees to hold it in position, it's not going anywhere.

In the event of having to remove it later, I'm sure you needn't worry. What goes in comes out. Note that the waist diameter of R5 stats is slightly variable depending on the brand.

One I installed recently.

Yep, more expensive, but does save a bit of time and effort, i.e. No cutting the steel band, and trying to squeeze the thermostat down the top hose.
In theory, should also be easier to replace the thermostat in future, but only time will tell.

Soak the hose in hot water for 5 mins.
