2006 75 CDTi Conn Undertray

Is there any major problem with removing the undertray beneath the engine? I’m on my third 75, I live in London and I scrape over every speed bump that I cross. It’s really getting on my nerves. I have always kept the tyres are at the correct pressures on all 3 cars and I’m hoping that removing the tray might give me a couple of cm extra space. Any ideas.

If you really want to remove it, the only problem would be more noise & filth getting on the underside

Personally I'd want it there to stop stones and debris - but yes, they do sit a couple of cm lower than the rest of the underside in my experience.

I've driven in most cities with a tray, and not had a scraping issue. Make sure it's not something else hanging down.

Those narrow, pyramid humps are worst for this - there are some near my daughter's house. I make sure I go slowly, but drive one set of wheels over them. A couple of them will catch my undertray if I try to straddle them. Pollution makers is what they are!

I removed the undertray from my ZTT last year. I don't notice any increase in noise level and there are many ways dirt can (and does) get in to the engine bay. Speed bumps were a problem with it fitted, but the ZT's are a bit lower than the 75's anyway.

You can't hear anything in a diesel anyway

Trust me, I can hear my suspension rattling above the engine - but only between music tracks! At 50mph, tyre noise is greater than engine noise. In my son's Picanto, I have, on several occasions, tried to restart it at the lights when it is already running, it is so quiet - too quiet.

If your under tray is scraping the speed humps then you are going to fast, that is what they are there for, unless it is hanging down somewhere.

Don’t seem to have this problem with my 75, loads of speed humps around here too.

Are you running the standard 16 inch wheels and tyres?

I go slow over speed humps and brake before them - I don't like broken springs, or damaging the underside, but 75s and ZTs are wide and low, and some of those pyramids are quite high. Standard wheels and tyres, 32psi front, 30 rear. And my tray is bolted up tight in all the fixing points, NOT hanging down. It passed its MoT in November, with one new spring. No advisories on suspension wear, so it can't be down to play in the bushes (even if it does rattle!)
