Sorry to see the death of a person, RIP.

The Tempe police chief has said in an interview the accident is likely not the fault of the AV.

People said she just walked out into the path of the vehicle and was immediately struck by it doing around 40mph.

They will most probably try to blame the pedestrian, there is already talk of the women being homeless, next you'll hear she was intoxicated (drunk).

So why did the DRIVER who had the steering wheel and pedals in front of them which will override the automatic systems fail to prevent the vehicle from colliding with the pedestrian?

Also, I don't have the statistics for road death fatalities in the US, so lets just use some simple numbers; lets say 50 people will be killed each year by autonomous vehicles. But that is still far better than 100 people being killed by manually driven vehicles? It may be a different 50 people that would've survived had they been manually driven, but there are still 100 people alive that would've died had they been manually driven.

Anyone who doesn't understand this simple fact is just a naysayer to new technology.

On your own arguments the car as an entity should be banned, as it is 'dangerous' technology that is causing fatalities. It was 'new' technology at one point! I bet people moaned then about how dangerous they were when compared to their horse and cart.
Yes, it had a 'driver' who has to look out for danger and act when the systems get it wrong. Trying to anticipate what a pedestrian is going to do and then waiting for the machine to react before doing anything lunacy total lunacy.
I will say it again until these things can see ahead assess the probability of the situation and start to take appropriate avoiding action then they should confined to a test track.

They already can, I doubt they are perfect, but what human driver is?

Really, these cars anticipate that the child is about to run on to the road.

As good as a person, apparently yes. Some people are set against them, I get that.
However there are plenty of you tube videos of cars in self drive mode.

They just said on Fox news that there is one fatality per 1 million miles with human drivers. Too early to say if self drives will be more or less than that.
As for the lady not using the crossing, we are always on the lookout for small kids running out chasing a ball or their pet dog. It shouldn't matter where she was crossing.

Theoretically maybe, but this one didn't anticipate the lady crossing where she shouldn't.

Quote taken out of context made in reply to quoted previous post.
I do not believe these cars anticipate only react to what the sensors 'see'. I drive a vehicle with lane assist which is turned off immediately as it detects all manner of irregularities in the road surface (especially on dual carriageways where there has been roadworks). If this technology is used for driverless cars who knows what could happen.

So these cars can't see very well in the dark and that k!! b looked like he was asleep. I imagine an alert human would have seen her earlier and braked and swerved, at least swerved. It would have only needed a few feet to the left to save her life. Do these cars not have better sensors for night vision or is it relying on cameras? Rip
