Funnily enough I've just been comparing my two. The auto runs along at 86-88 and can hit 90 under load but mostly sits tight at 86. The manual (which caused me to check as it's not getting the mpg I expect) struggles to hit 80 even under load, mostly it fluctuates between 74 - 77 depending how I'm driving.

I'd love to have them both up at 90-94

Are there any figures showing how much approx 10 degrees too low will effect mpg?

Does either car have the in-line stat mod?

It certainly does. The only fair way, would be the cabin heater set to off when checking the temperature rise of the coolant.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Yes, the heater does make a big difference. But think about it, it is in fact very much like a small radiator with a fan blowing cold air through it.

No both are running the correct stat only.

I guess you mean the original stat. You should be aware that the wax capsule in these changes over the years and the valve begins opening too early. This is very bad for achieving an optimal running temperature. See this for the lengthy details: https://the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=102943

This is why the cheap and easy in-line stat modification is so popular. Using a recommended brand (Gates, FirstLine or Wahler) of the Renault 5 in-hose thermostat, you'll get the running temperature into the 90C area.

When the engine is warming up, you can put the heater onto ‘recycle’ which means it recycles the air from inside the car through the heater. This will only do that for a set time, so you have to keep an eye on the button light. When it goes off, you have to press it again to resume. Remember, if you use it to much in winter, you will probably have to use the aircon to get rid of the condensation.

Plus you will very much need to keep flatulence in abeyance....
