Tyre Condition
Just been out to check my tyre pressures and noticed the following and wondered if the tyres are still ok to run on. The tyre outer sidewall is crazed and main tyre tread seems to be separating (line running all the way round) Hoping the pics can explain it better

Hi
Its a MOT fail if you can see the cords, but as long as your not planning a long high speed autobahn trip, I would leave them till your next MOT. But I am sure some will soon be along to give a different view! Regards Barry |

I've seen worse, look on the side for the date marker and see how old they are.

If its only 3 digits its prior to 2000. Personally I would change it with cracking at the tread base. I have seen it rapidly spread through to the case.

The tires have to be replaced up to 7 years since DOT due to the laws incl. Physics one.

Your tyres have perished.
Not enough to be an MOT fail, but I would still get them replaced as soon as convenient, as the fact they've perished means the rubber has hardened excessively and therefore will not grip the road so well. |

They don't look too bad and the summer is coming so they will be working in better conditions.
However have a good look at them just before your next MOT and make a decision then before the winter starts if you need to change them or not.--- |

I would take them back and demand their repair or replacement under the Consumer Rights Act.
Provided you have kept them correctly inflated and they are undamaged, to degrade like this in only a period of 22 months and only 13,000 miles for a tyre brand and model that is not a 'budget' one shows your tyres are not fit for purpose. I don't expect them to roll over, but if you are firm without being offensive or abusive, persistent and put everything in writing to Head Office if necessary, I have found that in similar, but not the same, circumstances either a full refund/replacement or an allowance has been granted. (BTW, I am not one of those people who always 'try it on', however, if I buy a quality item I expect it to do what it is meant to.) |

Very disappointing for the age!
Its a hard thing to advise on, personally if i was just running around locally at low speeds I'd live with them. If I was doing any sort of driving on high speed roads, I'd look at getting them replaced, as clearly they are not what they should be. Are all four tyres the same? If it helps my Dads been running the same set of Dunlops on his MGB GT V8 for over 30 years, despite my persistent efforts for him to change them!
