Yes if the video unit is faulty there isn't any display on the screen.

There's two possibilities with the difference in the two head units either the LCD backlight has gone or the brightness is turned down. Without a working video unit it's difficult to know which.

Yes the head unit will work with items unplugged you just lose the features that are disconnected.
