Default Diesel Crankshaft Pulley Noise

My manual diesel saloon has done about 95000 miles. Last Friday I encountered crankshaft pulley noise for the first time. I sprayed the alternator belt with belt dressing and the noise stopped immediately. I did about 70 miles over the weekend and the noise did not return. The noise started again today when the engine was cold but disappeared when the engine warmed up. Does the pulley always need replacing once the noise has started or can uneven forces from a dry belt twist a good pulley thus inducing the noise?

Belt dressing won't fix this I'm afraid.

I agree that if my pulley is disintegrating then it needs changing but why does warming the engine up or spraying with belt dressing stop the noise?

The noise is created by the two sections of the pullet striking each other. They can only do that when the rubber interleaf is failing. The noise usually quietens when the interleaf is lubricated with water, etc, or the revs are increased. Engine temperature will have an effect in the early stages but it's down hill from there. I've heard reports of a pulley disintegrating and the outer ring being ejected at light speed. It's a sooner rather than later thing really.

It depends how seized the bolt is - some have come off quite easily, others have had to really fight to get it off.
I have a quality aftermarket (not to be confused with the quick-failing cheap items other members have had issues with) or the OEM item here:
Crank Pulley - CDT

Mine wasn't too bad to get off, thankfully. Hopefully yours will be the same.

Since i had my engine changed ive noticed quite alot of 'diesely' noise coming from the crank pulley end. Its just like a loud engine with an extra bit of tappety ticking. Seems worse at idle but doesnt seem affected by temperature a such.

Does that sound like the pulley? Ive ordered one anyway, it cant hurt to change it.

I think they reused my old pulley, so it may not have liked being moved.

Sounds like it could well be - I guess you'll know soon!
