Default Cam Belt Change ---I'm not convinced.

I had an interesting conversation with a chap about changing cambelts......

Apparently the way he does it is, remove the cover, get a sharpe knife and split the belt in two lengthways. Remove the from half of the belt. Slide the new belt upto the old belt. Cut the last bit of old belt of and push the new belt all the way on.

I assume he changes (or doesn't as the case may be) tensioners, before refitting the covers.

Not sure what to make of it....

Heard of this years ago on old Fords and Vauxhalls, you split the belt in 2 with a Stanley knife whilst the engine is running! Sounds great until the remaining part snaps!

In theory it should work, saves having to use pulley clamps to hold the timing in position.
But I don’t think I would attempt it with the engine running!

a few people used to claim to doing this but i certainly wouldn't. The covers are stripped off so how much longer does it take to sort out the tensioner?

1. Yes it can be done..but...
2. its very dangerous
3. you'd be pretty daft to try it
4. I agree...if the engine is partly dismantled...why cut corners to save a few minutes?
5. I am getting old and can't remember what 5 was going to be....wheres my slippers.

Default Cam belt change

Have just had a nasty expierience re cam belt.
Outside lane M74, cam belt went.:SHOCKED:
Fortuatley repairs were covered under warrenty, ( only done 50K etc) but is this a comon occurance or was I just unlucky?

Sounds unlucky, depends on age as well. If its a K16 lump with leaky cam seals then sounds about right, but in retrospect a well maintained K16 / KV6 of low age then yes sounds a little unusual.

Default Cambelt

My V6 is coming up for it's 90k cambelt change but I spoke to a Rover Specialist in Staines who told me that he's never known a KV6 engine lose it's cambelt. He reckons they are pretyty much bullet proof. Not sure.
