Default Car stalled and won't go back into gear or even start in gear

Good afternoon.

Just had an unpleasant call from the wife - our rover 75 CDT stalled on the approach to a roundabout. Now it wont go into gear, but will start in neutral. If she attempts to start it in gear the car will not start.

Sounds serious and breakdown are on their way. Any ideas what this is likely to be? Because it won't start it gear, it seems unlikely it's a clutch fault, possibly something further along the transmission?

Can these cars start in gear normally?

Is it possible it stalled because of a clutch slave/master problem that didn't allow a downshift? Then with the foot brake or park brake on won't crank in gear because the clutch is engaged. Just thinking out loud here.

Is it manual or auto ?
If its an auto, had the same issue, turned out to be the gear selector switch mounted on top of auto box, under the air filter box.
The switch can be removed and opened up and the contacts cleaned!!

Its a manual. Mystery solved.

Getting to the car it turned out it had just dropped all of the clutch fluid in one go. Filled up and bled and working ok for now, but looks like a new clutch and cylinders are required unfortunately.
