Visited my mother last night and sadly the bell tolled on her ward for someone while I was there. Thankfully not for her yet but my heart goes out to those who I saw amongst a wall of grief around one of the side bays.

When you find yourself in these situations with others it is surprising how close you find yourself being drawn to them. One family hails from South Tyneside which I found surprising as usually Newcastle with its RVI and Freeman hospitals tends to be the centre of travel for the North East region when their local hospital facilities are lacking. Three times they have spent the night at their mother's bedside expecting the worst and three times she has made a miraculous recovery - sadly her diagnosis is terminal and it is only a question of time. On one of those three occasions her family was called to her bedside in the early hours but as for which bus they travelled on?

For some years now I personally have not really needed a car but it has been a godsend for removing that which the hospital does not provide for. I'm talking about the conveyance of bio bags with personal clothing and I'm sure that Phil will understand.

I would be more than happy to get on a bus with it and travel with it sat on the head of anyone who is arrogant and presumptuous enough to try to dictate what a total stranger can or cannot afford.

Almost reads like the natural conclusion of this thread would be universal income, A payment to everyone to cover these basic living costs?

I know people will think its an awful idea, and I can agree but at times like this, it makes sense.
