These cars are a funny bunch
As you say "these cars are a funny bunch"

I know mine is a diesel so might be different to the petrol models but I haven't had to put even one drop of water in my header tank in ELEVEN years of motoring. NONE at all.----------I've changed the anti-freeze once in that time.

Luck of the draw I guess. Must have been a mid-week car when everything was put together correctly.----

I've a petrol 1.8 also, and was losing coolant quite rapidy. However with no obvious signs of HGF or leaks. Upon further inspection, the o ring on the water pump was perished and so leaking gradually.

Bought a new water pump from Rimmers (unfortunately with evaporation chamber) and so far it seems to have sorted it out. TOUCH WOOD!!

Everything was replaced in May, head, belts, pump, inlet gasket, it was a proper job. She overheated after due to all the k seal in the rad still, so that was replaced as well. Tha overheat is what worries me. I am hoping it was an airlock that has burped out.

Do all water pumps come with an evaporator and you remove it before fitting or are there different specs of pumps - if so how are they described.

Cheers

A small hole drilled into the lowest point of the rear box allows condensation to drain away. The noise is minimal and you can fit a self tapper and a washer to cover it for the MOT. My last rear box rotted away in less than 3 years, spilling its horse hair along the way!

My car's fan ran for a few minutes after turning the engine off and then the next day the expansion tank is empty. So is it safe to drive about 5 miles to the garage that does work on my cars after topping up the expansion tank?

Apparently before I bought it the cam belt was changed but I can't remember if the dealer said the water pump was changed at the same time. How likely is this to be a similar problem waiting to happen?

On my 1.8t when i had a leaking Inlet Manifold Gasket i realised something was wrong as the fan kicked in and ran after i parked up -indicating a temp of 105 had been reached - as to your question it should be ok to run her to your local garage 5 miles away - just don't gun her - drive her gently.

I would ask them to get her up on a ramp and do a coolant pressure test -this will readily show a failed WP or a leak elsewhere eg a failed hose
