Default Water loss question 1.8

Are there any other reasons I would lose two expansion tanks worth of water suddenly bar the head gasket on a 1.8?

The car hasn't lost any water since the head was done earlier this year, not one bit. I took it to work week before last and did about 80 miles. It's stood this week. Checked it over this morning and the water had gone with no visible leaks, no water inside the car, and the radiator was brand new fitted with the head.

It may be unrelated, but she cut out on me one night a few seconds after start up the week I used her, restarted right away and seemed fine. Also, seemed A LOT of exhaust vapour today, I know its stupidly cold, but when she'd reached about 85 degrees it was still constantly pluming out and if I revved her she looked on fire!

Trying to eliminate things before I think the worst.

The exhaust smoke is probably due to the cold weather Dawn, top it up, bleed it properly and see if it does it again.

I've put a new cap on today as well. I don't think I dare go to work in her, not with the weather they're forecasting! Will have to take her out next weekend for a run around and see what happens.

Do you think it might be some kind of "burp"? It's been gurgling a bit since the head was done and no matter how many flushes they did it still did it because the matrix has had k seal in. The gurgling has got less, but now so has the water, could the air have worked its way out, leaving the space? Or am I being dumb?!

Its possible that it was an airlock, hopefully that's all it was!

Might be worth removing plugs 3 and 4 and see how they compare. If a leaking inlet manifold gasket into cylinder 4 is the problem then plug 4 might have a washed/whiter look to it.

Mine does it all the time Dawn. No visible leaks, runs fine, been pressure tested by my mechanic chappie but every now & again needs a top up
Today for example, as it was warm & sunny, did the usual checks & had to top it up. I would say don't worry about it & just keep an eye on the level & running temp.
These cars are a funny bunch
