I am about to do both mine and I normally put some injector cleaner in the filter and turn the engine for 30 seconds, soaking the injectors in pure cleaner and leaving them for a few hours to de crud. Then start up as normal, cloud of blue and then runs lovely....

any issues with doing this?? can it cause harm?

I did mine a few weeks back - I bought a Land Rover branded filter in the end. Forgot about the injector cleaner trick until it was too late, pity had meant to give it a shot, maybe next time. When I went through the history, my old filter had been on there for 4 years, so it was well overdue.

Interesting question Pete. I've often wondered about the overall effects of using neat injector cleaner.

When you think about it petrol is an excellent cleaner but can damage diesel engine injectors and HP pumps as it strips out the lubricity which the working tolerances in the system need as they are extremely close.

Don't think this will be a problem though as you won't get neat cleaner into the injectors (it will mix with the diesel in the fuel rail and lines) and running for 30 seconds most of the cleaner will have gone through the HP pump fuel gallery and diluted with the fuel in the system.

With the LP system running as it should you can fill a chip shop pickled onion jar in less than a minute.

So I'd guess the answer to your question is no, it won't cause any harm.

PS to late I see you have solved it
When changing the fuel filter, i usually loosen the filter head off the canister before I loosen the clip that holds the filter to the back of the battery box. Simples.

Hi David.
Surely you must have to loosen the bolt holding the filter first to raise it above the battery otherwise it would not turn, then tighten it back up to hold it tight then you can turn it.

If this method is used please use a rag/cloth to hold over the two ports other wise fuel can spill out, good method if you do not have anyone to help, or you do not have a vice if the top is to tight, few pics below

Note from the first pic how the flat edge is right up next to the battery the reason why you would have to raise it before turning.

Also when re-fitting make sure no hose or wires get trapped under the filter, I have removed some that have had the fuel line trapped under.

Just an observation.. isn't it an 8mm on the clamp ? and what i do is change the filter at the same time as the oil, then after decanting the used oil into a container for disposal, use the oil catch pan as a drip tray under the workmate to collect any escaping diesel whilst wrestling with the filter

Yes it is an 8mm on the clamp - if you follow Artic's method (which I use), you should not have to remove the whole assembly and wrestle with it in vices/workmates etc. Loosen the clamp, raise the filter an inch or two, re-tighten the clamp, then you can get both hands on the top to unscrew the top filter housing. As Steve says, use plenty of rags to catch diesel spills as you do this job.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Mick & Pete you are both quite correct it is an 8mm when I did the how to the one I was doing at the time had a 10mm bolt so i inadvertently put 10mm into the post, i have now rectified that thank you for bringing to my attention as 9 out of 10 are the 8mm as in the pic below Cheers Arctic.
