Default V6 Lower engine mount failure - is it unusual?

Is it unusual (not like a Tom Jones song) for the lower engine mount to go or is it actually inevitable in all/most cases?

Only reason asking is the one on the 13 year old is still sound after 75K miles. Car only gets around town driving and we live down a very bumpy (unmade) road so maybe it's unusual this one hasn't gone yet!

I checked it when replacing exhaust and doesn't show any sign of splitting/failure anywhere that I can see or feel! Of course having said that now, that probably means it'll just disintegrate into a million pieces on the next trip!

Think the auto's are more gentle on it.

But I suppose even an auto driver could weaken one with plenty of full throttle starts.

Stand at the front with the bonnet open, and get an assistant to selected drive - if the engine gives a noticeable leap, it's a sure sign the mount is split. Sometimes it's only visible when the bracket is removed from the car.

Braking is also improved if a faulty one is repaired, the weight of the engine can fight against you when braking, that's what put me on to it on my first 75.

I'm just about to do my third one now on my latest car - with it being manual it's clearly faulty.

I think it is pretty much inevitable Mine looked fine when fitted but when I removed it the middle fell out !!!!

Interesting stuff... the car is 2.5 manual, and has quite a few jerky gear changes (speaking as a passenger!), but really don't notice any untoward issues with the mount! Can't say theres any significant movement or knocking, even when starting.

Maybe just lucky, or it's failed in some fashion years ago and just isn't noticeable ? Wondering if there's a rock solid test short of removal and inspection?

Higher revs than normal and sharp (jolty) off the clutch will produce a knock through the bulkhead if the mount is scrap.

Thanks Lates, no such problem so it's definitely within acceptable parameters then, until it eventually goes that is!

I notice a slight 'shudder' when selecting 'drive' on my 75 diesel Auto - I know the mount is quite badly cracked (although not actually failed yet).
I've gone from a knackered mount to a fresh one before, the difference is lovely.

Very easy on a diesel, as I understand its slightly more difficult on a V6.
