Alternator regulator

Hi all,

how do I tell which regulator I need for my 2005 75 CDTi without taking things apart ?

I see they exist with 2 or 3 pins.

My guess is that year will be two, I have the same model.

Finding out isn't too difficult, just unplug the plug for the socket in the back of the alternator. You should be able to reach it without taking anything off. Then count the number of pins.

Just curious but why do you need to change the regulator ??

Is the alternator over charging ??

I have 14.6 volts with engine running.

Something is discharging my battery after a week or so. Brand new BOSCH battery, it's currently off the car, has been for over a month and is still at 12.8 volts.

It's not the regulator then.-There are a variety of things that can slowly discharge your battery however.

Lots of them have been posted on the forum and a search might be of help to you.

The thing is, the car is not drawing more than 20 miliampes when locked. I think the battery is not being charged and as I use the car the battery gradually drains.

I'd agree with your figure Pete - 20mA sounds about right once everything has gone to bye byes.

Have you got a fuel burning heater? With a faulty circuit board they can start sporadically and drain the battery.

Can an alternator pump out 14.6 volts and NOT charge the battery ???

I’d suspect a dead cell in the battery, the live feed from the alternator runs directly to the battery via a join on the starter motor so not much chance of anything going amiss in that area.

It's not the battery. I thought it was too, that's why I have a brand new one. Had the same problem with the old one
