Apparently there was no orange clip present, so do I need a complete new filter, or can I just get the clip (and possibly O ring) alone?

You can buy the clip on its own (think the ones doing the rounds now are white rather than the 'official' Rover orange - same design though).

It just clips on the 2 halves of filter on the outside to stop them rotating relative to each other, no O-rings or disassembly of the filter assembly needed - just remove from the tank, fit clip and return to position.
