Default MOT pass!

Pleased that my 75 has passed it's MOT this morning, the tester even mentioning how good my car is.

What was mentioned, but no advisories was the slight cracking on the rear tyres. Not happy about this as these Avon tyres are probably only about 3 1/2 years old. I have read on here before about tyres cracking. You would expect them to last at least 6 years though wouldn't you? I like to change tyres after 6 years no matter what the tread depth is, but 3 1/2 years?

Do you paint your tyres? I am told it does help preserve them if they stand out in the open all year. I use Autoglym Rubber Plus (only available in 5 litre cans) - presumably for the trade. With a number of cars, I find it lasts about 2 years (costs around £39.95).

Perhaps your Avons were old stock when fitted? There should be a date on them.

The rubber aint what it used to be! Congrats on the pass. Plastics and "modern" rubbers are showing their age more quickly these days. If they outlast the warranty period, they seem to have done their job as far as the manufacturers are concerned.

I doubt painting the sidewalls would help, the cracking is in the centre bands. Unfortunately, a quick look on Google mentions this problem quite a lot.

The date on the tyres is showing they were only about a month old when fitted.

I do seem to recall reading something about tyres manufacturers not being allowed to use some raw materials anymore, and this is the problem. Probably soot, yes soot. Years ago my brother was a lorry driver. He used to pick up tons and tons of it from power stations and deliver it to a large tyres company.

Possibly carbon black: see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_black

Never heard of soot being taken away from power stations. Nearly all of milled coal ends up as ash which is /was usually pumped to massive land fill lagoons. Soot did I believe, collect on electrostatic precipitators prior to going up the stack and the rapping gear would rattle the wires etc and presumably the soot would fall into hoppers? Perhaps this is what you are referring to? Any ex CEGB on here please?

Some of my older tyres have the start of cracking and a garage said it may be down to sunlight? My day to day ZT never suffers from this as tyres replaced every couple of years through use.
