What oil is best for the auto box ? As I know there’s a few different types as my automatic metro is a cvt and that takes a special oil.

Thank you.

Josh

This is what I bought recently:

All the best,

PS Just realised that I duplicated Trikey's recommendation (same as Terry of TS Autos told me to get) - so I think that's definitely a vote of approval all round:-)

It took me about an hour to drive up ramps, jack up the rear and put it on axle stands to level it, drain and refill (following the guide on the forum), then sit back on the ground. I also drained and refilled my engine with fresh oil (+ filter) at the same time.

Beinet's guide.

Make sure that you read it all, to the end of the thread.
Yep< I have 2 Gallons of Smith and Allen N402 Fluid sat here, going in next week
After i find out which pipe to pull off the cooler (N/s or O/s) on my diesel auto.

This is a lot more pleasant than the 800 forum where the same question about the Honda V6 auto turned into a massive row

Oil for the Rover Autobox seems to be almost a religion.
Here are the oils recommended for the Jaguar X-type, which uses the exact same box

Plenty to choose from:
https://www.carid.com/jaguar-x-type-transmission-fluid/

So if you live in France, or anywhere else for that matter, plenty of choice, if your thinking cap has been put on properly.

Nothing special about that box, AT ALL!!

Otherwise only flagellation remains.

Here is something about the JATCO box as used in the Rover and MANY MANY other cars:

Just shows that any Dexron III is fine.
No reason to be particularly worried!

The row on the 800 forum went something like (heavily paraphrasing, it was a long time ago)

"Dexron is fine."

"No, Dexron will DESTROY your gearbox, that's what it did to mine."

"I've got dozens of 800s (this was true) and always use Dexron, have for years with no problem, it meets the spec. It's fine!"

"ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR???!!11! IT DESTROYED MY GEARBOX."

I can't remember if the shouty one was banned or left, but it was a lot quieter afterwards...
