Only thumb pressure? The testers here have a kind of chipping hammar, blunt at one end, sharper at the other. If the blunt end doesn't give the right sort of resonance on rust they'll reverse it and see how deep the rust goes. Always a bit scary but then I'd rather know before things get really bad ...

Such Tools are used here too - the force applied should be equivalent to "thumb pressure" - I found it a strange way to describe the desired force when testing the structural integrity of Metal with any tool in hand ..... i'm not sure it translates ?
